Pocaris gonna make you sweat

The only thing awesome about sitting at the airport in Asia are most ruling asian drinks. The cans are strangely appealing in this slim size, and they are oddly heavy so they feel good in your hand. The coffee drinks are super smooth and always delicious, and Pocari Sweat...tastes strangely salty....like sweat....or gatorade.

Dim Sum In HK

Dim Sum is a Hong Kong thing. And it's really an awesome thing to have roast pork in chinese mustard and char siu bau's and choy sum all the way here. The dumpling skins are treated with things like black sesame oil to make things like the penguin dumpling....amazing.

Seriously I thought I could really rock eating the dumplings but after a while you really can have too many.

Le Grand Chef

On Korean Air I got to watch this crazy Korean movie called "Le Grand Chef". It was the most dramatic cooking Iron Chef like drama movie I think I had ever seen. Two men who are grandchildren of the apprentices to the Royal Chef of the last King of Korea are competing for the Royal Chef's knife. But of course wierd truths are revealed and lives get changed!

The food moments though make this movie totally worth watching.

Check out the trailer or beginning or whatever this is....

Easter Dinner

I really can't believe I haven't posted my Mom's cooking on here yet.. but I happened to have my camera on Easter to capture this pennsylvania-dutch style feast. She learned a lot of classic PA dutch recipes from my Grandmother on my Dad's side.. things like salad with hot bacon dressing and 'bott boi'.

So we have the classic easter Ham that was served with a cream gravy, potato filling - sort of a potato based stuffing made with bread and celery - and pepper cabbage, similar to cole slaw except it has no mayonnaise and less sugar. I think it's made with lots of vinegar and mustard seed.. delicious and simple. Really the only other place to get food like this would be a distant relative's barn somewhere in lancaster county. Awesome.

Chick Fil-A

Chick Fil-A is so damn good. The Sandwiches are pretty decent but what I really go for are the waffle fries and fresh squeezed lemonade. The cole slaw was also surpisingly edible - according to their website they cut cabbage fresh every day- pretty incredible for a fast food chain. I'll have to go for breakfast sometime and have a 'chicken breakfast biscuit' to see what that's all about..

Tom's Restaurant

It's hard to find a mom and pop anything anymore. Thank God in this day an age of Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and Ihops, lives and thrives places like Tom's Restaurant in Brooklyn. They give you warm cups of coffee and complimentary home baked cookies and muffins while you wait for a table. They are famous for there Key Lime Rickey's and Egg Creams. They gave us the most delicious walnut butter, strawberry butter, and cinnamon butter for our silver dollar pancakes. The counter is to die for, the people are the nicest, the food is the fastest and freshest. Especially since Nancy and I take our eggs over easy, but we both like the whites to be a little browned on the outside. And Tom's made a perfect Medium over easy egg.

Brooklyn my dear I have a serious crush on you.

Korean Air, I don't write with circles and squares

The flight attendents on Korean air are beautiful. They are all women, who wear starched hankerchiefs and are reed thin with perfect make up on. It's like being on a Korean music video. Korean Airlines won a Mercury award for best airline catering, which doesn't mean much to me in the real world but I have to say was the best airplane food I ever had.

The best and worst part was that they bake these fresh cookies, so everytime I fell asleep the smell of cookies would wake me up again.

Here are pictures of my Korean Air Bi Bim Bap lunch. I love the special tube of Korean Spicy Bean Paste.

Dakar, Senegal

Local beer in Dakar,

THE BEST french fries with anchovy sauce,

and super yummy local fish topped with tangy salsa and a side of seasoned rice.

Most of the restaurants i got to go in Dakar were beautifully decorated with a pile of fruits as such. Not to mention those tall handsome bartenders... So yummy.

AND...
I was so lucky enough to be invited by a local family on a small island called Goree, and the big mama cooked this amazing (gigantic) plate of what's similar to paella. The dish was big enough to feed 8 of us little Japanese people. I think it was the best chicken I had ever had in my life. (I can call these chickens and goats grew in their backyard "truely" organic.)

and Yes, i would go back to Dakar again anytime for that plate of paella.

Southwark

How did I ever miss eating at Southwark?

Is it because it's been there forever? Is it because it gets overshadowed by the 4rth Street Famous Deli? Is it because I get a hankering for Coquettes pate whenever I'm in that area or The Royal Tavern's Nachos?

I dunno but I'm an idiot because this place is a winner on all accounts.

I greatly admire a damned good bartender and service. Anyone who can make a good cocktail, be knowledgable about your food and can do it with casual attentiveness and wit gets all my money. We got drinks we normally never get because no one knows how to make them well anymore. Like a hot toddy with a lemon spiked with cloves and just a hint of honey. Or a an old fashion, if anyone gets the gin fizz please let me know how it is.

The food is no less awesome. A farmers cheeseplate that made me tear and desserts that made me want to give up a first born.

All this wrapped up in the most beautiful old dark wood bar with the always flattering type of bar lighting.

DairyLand

When you live on the west coast, things like Dairyland just don't exist. Maybe that's why I stick it out through the rough winters and humid summers of Philly, for the random discoveries of things like Dairyland.

I mean you can get a Snyder's Pretzal cone ( I know I know I was kicking myself for not getting one......) You can get 2 hot dogs and an ice cream for under 3 bucks. You can get soft serve, turkey chili, hard pack ice cream, a handmade chipwich and a malted milkshake. Oh and it's a drive-thru, with handwritten menus, and it's next to the drive thru beer distributer!

Seriously this is just the beginning of sunny days and places like this.

Aprons

I was going up to Germantown for work and I had asked our friend Nicole where to have lunch, since Germantown was her hood. She immediately reccommended Aprons. Which is Italian and Soul Food. Living in South Philly made me opt for the soul food option of the menu. I've learned that normally you can't do 2 things equally well, ones gotta be better.

The food was delicious, and everything was done really friendly and laid back. Sometimes a little too laid back since we we're in a hurry to get on with our work trip, but it was Friday.

I got the fried catfish which was delcious, fresh tasting, breaded in cornflour, and was light and crispy and not at all oily. And all the sides, especially the fried corn, was delicious!

And the aprons ice tea tasted like a rasberry cocktail.

IN -N-OUT Burger

So I was just in San Francisco for a fun little weekender. Now San Francisco is a total foodie town, I am sure there is much better food to have been had in North Beach. However, we all just wanted something bad, yet oh soooo good. IN-N-OUT burger is a staple of the west coast. A Double-Double (double meat/double cheese) is nothing short of magic. Make it "animal style" and you have created one of the best burgers, with every fixin imaginable, from pickles to special sauce. You can only eat here maybe 1-3 times a year, but that is about how often I get out to the West coast. Now off to the treadmill.

Japan Pizza Hut

Found this on flickr, possibly the most amazing pizza of all time. 1/2 mini hamburgers with corn and green peas, 1/2 tomatoes, 1/2 sausage and bacon roll crust with fruity ketchup, 1/2 cheesy rolls crust with maple honey syrup?? I would go all the way to japan just to eat this. If pizza hut had this kind of thing here I would eat there ALL THE TIME!!
